| Cities like Phoenix are turning to “cool pavement” to combat the urban heat island effect. A reflective coating applied to asphalt decreases the surface temperature, helping to mitigate nighttime heat and extending pavement lifespan. But research has revealed a surprising tradeoff: Pedestrians standing on this treated pavement actually feel hotter at certain times of day.
While officials in Phoenix argue that pedestrians on nearby sidewalks won’t be significantly impacted, the findings highlight the need for careful consideration of where and when to deploy experimental climate solutions. Some experts emphasize the importance of prioritizing shade and tree cover over less tested approaches, reports Linda Poon.
